I believe you'd be correct if Cannabis was treated as a class 3 drug, but it isn't. As class 1 I believe that Session's would do anything in his power to prevent it's use. Congress won't confront it directly, but have told him he could not have funds to take action against cannabis in State's with laws that permit it.
What's needed is for Congress to listen to the people and do what's right, change the designation of cannabis. Treating it as a State's Right issue will probably make it legal practically everywhere in a decade or less. I hope they go one step further and instruct the FDA to initiate permitting it to be used where anecdotal evidence is overwhelming. Currently, even if Doctor's believe it's effective, if it's found in the hospitals they can lose Federal accreditation, and funding.
I believe that you can find plenty of support in both the Democratic and Republican parties to pass such legislation if they were working together. Sadly it appears that the leadership of both parties seems to prevent such actions, and I doubt that their are enough Republican's who'll agree to it to do it alone.
