THE FINAL WORD and Microsoft's Costly mistake.
Ram Pemmaraju's Patent on COBAS Filing date was Oct. 2004 with a priority date of of Sept. 2000.

Even though PhoneFactor began around in 2001
it's earliest Patent Filing date was Feb. 2009, with a priority date of Nov 2006.

Opinion :
Although Microsoft's PR on its acquisition of phone Factor on October 4th 2012, the Purchase Price was non-disclosed at that Time.
I have not been able to find the actual Purchase price.
IMO - I would imagine, Microsoft's $9.7M Settlement, was more or equal to the price Microsoft paid for PhoneFactor.
