Sweeney Chiropractic Clinic Prevents and Treats Summer Gardening Injuries and More

MIDWEST CITY, Okla., June 29, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Back pain and spinal injuries can occur from summer gardening activities and yard work. Chiropractors can address back pain, shoulder pain, knee pain and more and help patients learn how to garden and perform routine maintenance activities outdoors while reducing their risk of injury and discomfort. Repetitive actions, poor posture, and few breaks can lead to injuries and muscle strain in gardeners. Sweeney Chiropractic Clinic helps patients to prevent injuries and also reduce recovery times for current injuries.

There are a number of injuries associated with gardening and yard work. Common summer injuries include neck pain, low back pain, sciatica, and tendonitis. Mid and low back pain is a common complaint. This can result from nerve compression causing referred pain. Chiropractic adjustments can alleviate this pressure and stimulate the body’s healing process. Gentle and non-invasive spinal adjustments, exercises, and education can help gardeners feel better and avoid future injury and pain.

Chiropractors suggest the following tips for safe summer gardening to help maintain health and decrease the risk of back pain and other summer-related health issues:

  • Wear supportive shoes for needed foot and arch support to minimize back strain.
  • Wear a wide brimmed hat to reduce sun exposure and stay hydrated.
  • Take breaks as needed and perform activities in the morning or in the later part of the afternoon.
  • Stretches and windmills are suggested before engaging in gardening or vigorous outdoor activities.
  • Switch hands regularly - Repetitive activities and using only one side of the body when performing a gardening activity, such as digging or weeding with only the right hand and arm, can result in an avoidable injury.
  • Bend and lift with both legs to reduce pressure on the back. Good posture is important in distributing weight and pressure on the spine and joints of the body and can lessen the chance of experiencing discomfort after gardening and yard work.

“Chiropractic treatments can effectively address gardening and yard work injuries but patients can do much for themselves to prevent injuries," said Dr. Steve C. Sweeney. “As an experienced Midwest City chiropractor, I see how subtle chiropractic techniques work to rebalance the spine and promote healing, often shortening recovery times for those injured. I work to educate patients on how to perform activities safely and reduce the chance of injury or pain.”
