Trends in biopharmaceuticals are benefiting single use systems and products, accelerating both manufacture and consumption. A new report from BCC Research forecasts an expansion at CAGR above 12% through 2021 in the US and 9% in Europe. Companies such as ThermoFisher, Danaher, VWR, GEHealthcare, and others operate in this segment, estimated at reaching $4.3 billion by 2021. The range of items includes filters, bioreactors, containers, and the specialized contents as single serving treatments. They also include more ‘living organisms’ such as antibodies or proteins that require specialized handling or customization. Lower manufacturing costs, reduced maintenance and limiting water or sterilization required by devices continue to deliver economic benefits along with technological improvement.

Additional single use items are expected as contract manufacturing expands to supply the industry, according to BCC Research. The industry has shifted to prepackaged and single use items since plastics and shipping revolutionized the medical supply chain and technologies that gained popularity in the 1970s.
