Though more than half of America's 78 million companion dogs are a mix of breeds, none of the major manufacturers has produced a premium food specifically formulated for the nutritive needs of the mutt. What sets a mutt apart from its pedigreed cousins is their more diverse gene pool which statistically results in a 2+ year longer life span with fewer health issues -- both qualities have been major contributing factors to the pet sector's year-on-year growth.
