House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) and multiple other people were shot at a congressional baseball practice in Virginia early Wednesday morning.
Scalise was reportedly shot in the hip and at least one other aide was also hit in the chest by a gunman with a rifle. Scalise is expected to survive.
The gunman was shot by U.S. Capital Police, apprehended and taken to the hospital.
Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT), however, told Fox News the gunman was dead. He also said a staffer used a belt as a tourniquet to stop Scalise's bleeding.
Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) said he was leaving the practice when a man approached them and asked if Republicans or Democrats were on the field.
He said the encounter was "very, very strange."
Scalise, 51, is the House majority whip. He has represented Louisiana’s First Congressional District since 2008 and chairs the House Republican Study Committee. He is married with two children. Scalise's district includes New Orleans.
White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer tweeted that both President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence are aware of the incident.
