Computerworld Recognizes the 2017 Best Places to W

The Computerworld editorial team compiled this exhaustive list based on a comprehensive questionnaire focused on company offerings such as benefits, diversity, career development, training and retention, as well as a worker satisfaction survey completed by a random sampling of IT employees at the participating organizations. The 100 winning organizations were then categorized by company size based on the number of employees (large, midsize, small).

Definition of a Top 100 Organization
As organizations continue to rely on technology for advancement, it is encouraging to see that Best Places to Work in IT companies are investing in training their current tech employees, offering an average of 10 training days per employee in the past fiscal year. This focus on continued growth will increase in 2018, as companies anticipate increasing their tech training budget by 53%. This additional knowledge is not going unnoticed; an average of 11.7% of IT staff were promoted in the past fiscal year. These IT teams will also have new colleagues in 2018; 70% of organizations are looking to increase U.S.-based headcount.
What makes these organizations special extends beyond the virtual office walls. Employees receive an average of 20-27 days of paid time off depending on tenure. There is also symmetry between the benefits that are important to IT employees and what organizations offer. The top five benefits that tech teams most appreciate have not changed since the 2016 survey. The benefits are health insurance, paid time off, 401k/403b plans or profit sharing, flexible hours, and bonuses. Companies are aligned, with 100% offering health insurance, paid time off and 401k/403b plans, 45% offering profit sharing, and 97% flexible hours; 89% of organizations have also set aside dollars for bonuses for tech employees in 2017.
The South Atlantic is home to 28% of 2017 winning companies, including Ultimate Software (No. 1 midsize), followed by North Central (19%) which is home to Quicken Loans (No. 1 large). Both regions are growing hot areas for tech jobs and good employers. The industries most represented on this list are IT services/consulting (27%), health/medical services (17%) and finance (11%).
