I've dealt with patents before, where I was an inventor or co-inventor and we'd go back and forth with the patent office and patent lawyers in order to work out all the kinks they didn't like; and no, I didn't get rich and I had to sign-off patent rights to the company I worked for, I just exist as the inventor.
One thing I can say about patent application process, that it takes years, one we filed in 2012 was only granted in late 2016 and another one is awaiting PO response, almost never patent is granted on first iteration that I've seen.
