World of Heroes Bursts Onto Weekly Top 25
At an age when most people are far, far into retirement, Stan Lee is going where most nonagenarians dare not: YouTube.
Stan Lee's World of Heroes grew by 238% over last week to take the No. 20 spot on the YouTube Tracker, its first appearance on Ad Age's weekly chart. The 1 million views the channel garnered last week bring its grand total of views to more than 5.4 million. It now ranks No. 92 of 132 in the Originals All-Time Ranking.
The spike in views for the channel coincides with Mr. Lee's 90th birthday on Dec. 28. There were a number of stories written about the milestone celebration, most of which mentioned World of Heroes.
The channel, which has been around since July, describes itself as a place "for all things related to the hero lifestyle and enthusiast culture." There are scripted and unscripted shows, celebrity guests and animation. Most videos are parodies of superheroes and superhero themes. One popular series, for instance, is "Bad Days," which shows familiar superheroes like Spiderman and Superman having a rough time. A series called "StanCo's Real Life Toys!" depicts kids receiving famous superhero accessories with disastrous results.
Mr. Lee actually stars in a number of the series. In "Stan's Rants," for instance, he waxes on about what he thinks are some very important issues. In another series he has cocktails with various guests. The video with the most views on the channel right now is "Happy Holidays from Stan Lee," which features a cartoon version of the legendary comic-book writer singing his own version of the "Twelve Days of Christmas."
Stan Lee started working in comics in 1939 when he took a job at New York's Timely Comics at age 17. He went on to create characters such as the Fantastic Four, the Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, the X-Men, and the Amazing Spider-Man.
