I suppose any movie that is as well made as this one was poses editorial challenges. The camera definitely loves the ship at sail and the contrast of quarters and entertainment between officers and crew.
We'll never know if the additional 24 minutes would have had more people shifting in their seats wanting the film to literally 'cut to the chase'.
But thanks to you we can watch what we never saw without going to the multiplex! ty!
Side bar. When you watch war movies from the 50's you'll notice that the camera also loved them those aircraft carriers and B52's!
It was all new to audiences, that's the key. Plus, the Defense Department cooperated enthusiastically with Hollywood.
Many of those movies were ads to increase support for huge Defense budgets. Love those planes and ships? We need more of 'em!
