Sasse: Some Reports 'Overheated' on Trump Sharing Classified Info With Russians
share this email

Sen. Ben Sasse (R-NE) said some reports are "overheated" following a bombshell story on President Trump's reported disclosure of classified information to Russian officials

The Washington Post, citing current and former U.S. officials, said Trump jeopardized a critical source of intelligence on ISIS in his conversations last week with the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

White House National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster called the report "false" last night, while Trump defended himself on Twitter, saying he shared "facts."

Sasse, a frequent critic of Trump, emphasized on "Fox & Friends" there is a lot of information about the situation that he and other don't know yet.

He pushed back on the notion that the president may have committed a crime.

"I think you're going to see some national media use language like illegality. That's sort of goofy because it's very difficult for a president to break laws related to classified information because he's the ultimate de-classifier," said Sasse.

He added that there will be an important debate about Trump's reported "imprudence" in his talks with the Russians, adding that the Kremlin "doesn't have our interests at heart."

The Post reported that after the meeting, the White House "took steps to contain the damage, placing calls to the CIA and the National Security Agency."

The White House maintains that Trump did not give away any information about intelligence sources and methods.
