Hypothetical Situation to Ponder :)

Let's say that I am one of the richest men in the word and as such also want to make a huge difference in the world health wise. I mean I have all these funds at my disposal to eradicate a terminal disease from the face of the earth. Let's also say that I am sincere and not just rich as hell but also influential and have absolutely no interest in a financial gain from my efforts, I am completely sincere and am not trying to create the next huge company. I personally believe this represents Mr Gates fairly well. So now I am ready to put all of this in play, got a shopping list and some connections, let's do this!!
I purchase a PCR machine, hell at 100k these are cheap so maybe I get a couple of these and perhaps during testing with my associates we happen to find some deficiencies with the PCR technology, yeah it's fast but it can't determine whats viable from what is not right? But damn fast when you overlook the enrichment test. And wasn't there something about false positives and negatives? Now, perhaps someone has put a bug in Mr or Mrs Gates ear about a alternate technology that offers fast results and near simultaneous antibiotic sensitivity. If it were me and I am rich as hell I would say "ok, let's get some of those and give them a shot, maybe a trial one against the other and see what happens. Or possible use the PCR to eliminate people from consideration of being TB infected or even visa versa, PCR is expensive after all and by comparison BNP costs peanuts. This is all fun to think of hypothetically, which is all this is, but if I am the man of influence here and the main backer financially and also sincerely trying to make a difference, I would want to know that I have the best mechanism to eliminate tuberculosis, wouldn't I? We have heard all the arguments and Mr Gates has possibly also, but with all these means at my disposal, wouldn't I want to pit one against the other to see once and for all which performs best and then go from there.
Now, honestly this is mostly for fun and I have no experience with medical devices, or stocks, all I have is the logic of a programmer, Xs & Os, that's it and hopefully a little common sense. If I had all this at my disposal and wanted to eliminate all the BS and third party info from my equation, I'd do it myself side be side testing. Better technology wins and that's the end of it! What better way to find out. I appreciate any comments on this hypothetical situation. I may have over simplified in a number of ways, but as a programmer I seem to see more in black and white than colors.
Just curious, any thoughts out there? Just for fun
