Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Sunday signed a bill that prohibits so-called sanctuary cities and counties.
The legislation allows police to inquire about the immigration status of anyone they detain. It also requires local officials to comply with federal requests to hold criminal suspects for possible deportation.
The bill has a provision that means defiant sanctuary cities can be slapped with fines of up to $25,000 per day. It also exposes any sheriff or official to jail time if they release a criminal illegal immigrant without cooperating with federal immigration officials.
On "Fox & Friends" this morning, Abbott said the bill "effectively bans" any city, county or governmental body in the state of Texas from adopting sanctuary policies.
He said it will also engender better cooperation between local, state and federal officials, to ensure that everyone is following the law.
"Isn't this quasi-insane that we have to pass a law to force law enforcement officers to comply with the law?" Abbott remarked.
As for critics of the bill, such as State Sen. Sylvia Garcia (D-Houston), Abbott said they're just throwing around "wild rhetoric" that's divorced from reality.
He explained that the vast majority of Texas residents have nothing to worry about, as this emphasis on enforcing federal immigration law is intended to target criminal illegal immigrants who are wanted by ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement).
"If you were here, regardless of your status, and you have not committed a crime that makes you subject to an ICE detainer, you have no problems whatsoever," Abbott said.
