European Film Forum - Creating the future: the MEDIA programme after 2020
The 2017 edition of the European Film Forum in Cannes will take place on Monday, 22 May from 14:30 to 17:30 at Salon des Ambassadeurs. It will include a keynote speech from a high level representative from the European Commission, a scene setter by Ira Deutchman (Professor, School of the Arts Film Program at Columbia University) an interview of Agnieszka Holland (Director) two moderated panel discussions with proeminent industry representatives, financiers and managers and closing remarks by Giuseppe Abbamonte (Director at DG CONNECT, European Commission).
A first panel will look at the priorities of MEDIA and how the future MEDIA programme could best add value in a changing European and global audiovisual landscape. It will tackle core issues such as: How are the ecosystems of financing evolving and how can MEDIA not only complement but also encourage private initiatives and leverage private investments? How are the national support schemes being revised with respect to the policy objectives (e.g. competitiveness or cultural diversity) and to the different schemes and instruments (e.g. grants or loans)? How should these various instruments be ideally combined in order to effectively support the sector across the value chain?
A second panel will focus on how to increase the visibility and to attract audience for European creations. The discussion will look at how MEDIA could address this challenge either through its specific programme or by seeking synergies with national film policies. How to improve cross-border distribution and promotion of European films? While it is difficult to predict the individual success of each individual film, could the objective of better circulation be more strongly integrated in national film policies? If so, how would it be put into practice? Should promotional activities be more vigorously supported by MEDIA? Should this support benefit to fewer or more audiovisual works? What platforms of distribution should be involved in such promotional activities? What potential implications would it have on the models of distribution? These are some of the topics that will be discussed with the film industry during the conference.
In adition to the main conference, the European Film Forum will also feature a dense programme of roundtable discussions and panels with representative of audiovisual industry and policy makers:
