Trump’s first nominee for Navy secretary also withdrew before confirmation hearings
WASHINGTON—President Donald Trump’s nominee for secretary of the Army has pulled his name from consideration after a siege by lawmakers and advocates who objected to stands he previously had taken on social issues.
The nominee, Mark Green, withdrew Friday, citing “false and misleading attacks” against him. He is the second of Trump’s nominees for Army secretary to drop out prior to appearing before the Senate for confirmation. Trump’s first nominee for Navy secretary also withdrew before confirmation hearings.
In a statement expressing “deep regret” for the decision to pull out, Green said he supported Trump’s goals but that his nomination had become a distraction.
“Tragically, my life of public service and my Christian beliefs have been mischaracterized and attacked by a few on the other side of the aisle for political gain,” he said in his statement. “I believe it is critical to give the president the ability to move forward with his vision to restore our military to its rightful place in the world.”
