Trump’s Twitter addiction might be annoying and frustrating for many Americans, with his tirades and false claims. But for the Secret Service? It’s a nightmare. As it turns out, his online persona is making the Secret Service’s job increasingly more challenging. The increase of threats to Trump is more than any president in the past. Dan Bongino, a Secret Service agent for George W. Bush and Barack Obama, stated:
“The Twitter thing is creating a lot of hassles. It’s generated a tidal wave of threats that the Secret Service can’t ignore. By necessity, they have to triage what’s credible and what’s not, and it’s tough to do by just looking at a 140-character tweet.”
Because of the openness of social media, and infuriated Americans feeling that they can speak directly to Trump through Twitter, the Secret Service faces an impossible task. They can’t keep track of the threats Trump is receiving, and are getting worn out. “It’s an arithmetic impossibility to interview every single person who sends a threat,” Bongino said. “It’s not possible.”
What makes their job even harder still is Trump’s frequent travel to Mar-a-Lago, an unsecured location that a potential threat can target more easily than the White House. Because of Trump’s tweets and the Secret Service’s need to take all of them seriously, the Secret Service will have to increase security at the resort, costing millions. And as the Washington Post reported, they already had to request an additional $60 million towards their $2 billion dollar budget–$30 million of which would go to Trump Tower.
Americans might be paying $60-$90 million more per year to secure Trump because he can’t control his tweeting.
