WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., May 01, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- NorthEast Community Bancorp, Inc. (OTC:NECB) (the “Company”), a majority owned subsidiary of NorthEast Community Bancorp, MHC, reported net income of $1.5 million for the quarter ended March 31, 2017 compared to net income of $1.1 million for the quarter ended March 31, 2016.  The increase in net income was primarily the result of loan growth in the lower Hudson Valley and continued loan portfolio restructuring through attrition of specific asset types.

Net interest income for the first quarter increased by $1.6 million or 30.2% to $6.8 million at March 31, 2017 from $5.2 million at March 31, 2016.

Total consolidated assets increased $91.2 million, or 14.0%, to $742.6 million at March 31, 2017 from $651.4 million at March 31, 2016.  Loans receivable increased by $99.5 million or 18.9% to $627.3 million at March 31, 2017 from $527.8 million at March 31, 2016, while commitments, loans-in-process and standby letters of credit outstanding increased to $297.5 million as of March 31, 2017 compared to $184.3 million at March 31, 2016.  The increase was primarily the result of our continued focus on growing our lending operations in the lower Hudson Valley.

Total liabilities at March 31, 2017 were $631.7 million compared to $545.4 million at March 31, 2016, an increase of $86.4 million, or 15.8%.  The increase in total liabilities was due to a $94.7 million increase in deposits from $464.7 million at March 31, 2016 to $559.4 million at March 31, 2017.   Federal Home Loan Bank advances decreased by $8.5 million to $62.9 million at the end of the first quarter of 2017, compared to $71.3 million at March 31, 2016.
