Poll: 67% of Americans Say the Democratic Party Is Out of Touch

67 percent of Americans say the Democratic Party is out of touch with everyday citizens' concerns, according to an ABC News/Washington Post poll.
Meantime, the poll found that 62 percent of respondents believe the Republican Party is out of touch, while 58 percent said the same for President Donald Trump.
Perhaps the most striking thing about the poll is that nearly half of Democrats say their party is out of touch (44 percent), compared to 30 percent for Republicans.
On "Fox & Friends Weekend" today, Republican New York City Councilman Joe Borelli and Democratic strategist Richard Fowler debated what this means about the state of the Democratic Party.
Borelli said Democrats still haven't stopped to look in the mirror after their stunning defeat in the 2016 election, and this poll paints a clear picture of a party in "disarray."
"It's just about being part of this 'resistance movement,' playing to the cheap seats in the party," Borelli said of growing progressive sentiment in the party. "And it's unclear how this is going to play out for them going forward."
Fowler acknowledged that the party is "recalibrating" and "restructuring" right now, as they search for a new leader.
"We're trying to figure out what our message is, what our strategy is, and there's many folks working on that," Fowler said.
Borelli said the Democrats' biggest problem is that there is no real leadership in the party post-Obama.
"The truth is that the Democratic Party is a ship without a captain," Borelli said. "And this is not a good place to be going into 2018 midterm elections, where you have to defend four Senate seats in states where Trump won."
"It's a disaster waiting to happen for the party, and they're not willing to make the changes necessary to correct it."
The ABC News/Washington Post poll was conducted by landline and cellular telephone April 17 to 20, 2017, in English and Spanish, among a random national sample of 1,004 adults.
