Madison County is kicking off a new program for collection of agricultural/AG plastics, which historically have been difficult to recycle.
The collection program is in conjunction with the county’s new agreement with the JBI, Inc. company of Niagara Falls, which is turning plastic into oil, according to the Madison County Department of Solid Waste and Sanitation.
An announcement event for the program’s launch will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at ABC Farms in Canastota, said the department.
Farms that agree to bring their AG plastics to the county landfill and/or one of the transfer stations for collection will receive a lawn sign "proclaiming their dedication to keeping this type of plastic from being burned and keeping it out of our landfills," the department said. Agricultural plastics can include sheets, rods, tubing and films used in the cultivating and processing of agricultural products, plus usage in equipment and machinery for bins, chutes, liners and hoppers, according to professionalplastics.com. For more information, call the county’s recycling hotline at 1-800-721-2208.
