Ought to be fun - Sanders Heads to Red States, Says Dems Need Support Beyond the Coasts

Sen. Bernie Sanders and new DNC Chairman Tom Perez are heading to red states, beginning today, with the former Democratic presidential candidate calling on the party to move beyond the East and West coasts.

"We're going to be fighting to see that the Democratic Party becomes a 50-state party. You can't just be a West Coast party and an East Coast party," Sanders said on CNN Sunday morning.

Sanders and Perez are heading to Maine, Kentucky, Florida, Arizona and Nevada, with potentially additional stops in the works.

The Vermont senator predicted a backlash against the new White House, saying "working people are going to wake up" and oppose the administration's plans for tax reform, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and education.

"All over this country, in red states and in blue states, people are beginning to stand up. They're beginning to fight back. They're demanding a government which does not just represent the billionaires, but represents the working class of this country," he said.

The swing comes on the heels of a better-than-expected showing by a Kansas Democrat to fill an open House seat.

On Tuesday, a U.S. House special election in Georgia could see Democrat Jon Ossoff come out with the most votes against several Republican rivals.

If he does not clear 50 percent of the vote, he would face the top Republican vote-getter in a runoff.

The "Outnumbered" hosts discussed the race and Sanders' comments today, with Guy Benson saying Dems are "energized" after the close Kansas defeat last week.

Kennedy said Dems "will not stop talking about it" if Ossoff gets to 50 percent tomorrow and takes the seat, which is vacant after Tom Price left to become HHS secretary.

Meghan McCain expressed doubt about the strategy of sending Sanders on a cross-country tour to build support.

"That's the vision for the future?" she asked.
