My deceased grandfather trained a chipmunk to take a nut out of his shirt pocket. He first put a nut on top of his shoe, then his ankle, then his knee, then his lap and finally in his shirt pocket. It just took a couple of days of occasional feeding to gain the chipmunk's trust. Yes, the chipmunk had a great sense of smell, he did not have to see it to know where it was.
