I can cite two extremes, the successful one was Amgen, which today is like a big Pharma, but once was a tiny biotech. The other is DNDN, which after many struggles did get their drug Provenge approved, but while the stock rose dramatically on the news, ultimately sales couldn't sustain the company and it went bankrupt. Their are many other companies that fall in between these two extremes, but the point is, it's possible to have tremendous success without selling out to big Pharma, but it's also possible that a product that's approved won't be a financial success at all.
I've been invested in IMGN practically since its inception, it's had many partnership with big Pharma, an approved drug, but it's still struggling to be a success. I still believe it eventually will be.
