An Arizona Democrat blasted the "injustice department" under Attorney General Jeff Sessions, warning that the new immigration enforcement crackdown will divert law enforcement resources.
U.S. Rep. Raul M. Grijalva represents Nogales, where Sessions spoke Tuesday and promised "a new era" and an end to the Obama administration's "catch and release" policies.
Grijalva said the remarks show "another day at the (in)justice department" under Sessions and warned that President Trump's immigration crackdown will "erode our moral character as a nation."
"Law enforcement is not a zero-sum game," he said, according to the Washington Times.
"Mandating federal prosecutors to focus on immigrants instead of focusing on crime means valuable resources will be tied up achieving political goals instead of keeping Americans safe. All the while, the human impact of families split apart and efforts to criminalize innocent people continue to erode our moral character as a nation," said Grijalva.
On "America's Newsroom" today, former Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R) pushed back, arguing that immigration laws must be enforced as they are written and the border must be secured.
Brewer said border crossings were way down in January and February, including in Arizona, which has long seen drug and human traffickers come through illegally.
"The numbers have stopped because they know we're not playing games anymore," she said.
