Secretary of State Rex Tillerson issued an ultimatum to Russia on Tuesday – either stand with the US and other “likeminded” nations against Syria or side with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his allies Iran and the militant group Hezbollah.
"We want to relieve the suffering of the Syrian people. Russia can be a part of that future and play an important role," Tillerson said to reporters following meetings in Italy with top diplomats. "Or Russia can maintain its alliance with this group, which we believe is not going to serve Russia's interests longer term."
Tillerson's comments come just before he is scheduled to meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Moscow and days after President Trump ordered airstrikes against a Syrian air base after Assad attacked his citizens with chemical weapons.
On "Fox & Friends" this morning, Kellyanne Conway said Tillerson's strong statement "speaks volumes."
She said that Tillerson's "unequivocal" remarks - combined with Trump's decisive action in ordering the missile strikes in Syria - show that the administration will not tolerate the use of chemical weapons.
As for an actual plan to remove Assad from power, Conway said that Trump will continue to hold his cards close to his vest.
"And he should be doing that," Conway said. "This is in the interest of our nation for the commander-in-chief - the president - and his national security team to take action privately."
