Flexion Distraction Therapy a Good Alternative to Back Surgery, Mills Chiropractic Center Reports

KITTANNING, Pa., April 09, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- In an effort to increase awareness of pain-relieving options, Mills Chiropractic Center today announced its offering of flexion distraction therapy. This therapy focuses on decompressing the spine to alleviate the problem of bulging spinal discs and the problems that result from them. It is said to help bring fluids back into the discs and allow the nerves in the affected areas to heal.

Many people suffer from low back pain, sciatica, and leg pain not because of injuries, but because of something far more all-encompassing: gravity. As the years go by, gravity's pull causes body parts to sag or become compressed. When too much compression happens in the spine, it can cause disc herniation which often results in pain.

The idea of relieving this pain by easing the pressure on the discs has driven the creation of several types of treatment. One of the most popular in the chiropractic field is the flexion distraction technique, sometimes referred to as the Cox Technic. This is sometimes recommended for people who have had back surgery that did not provide the desired relief, but it is also a chosen therapy for those who want to avoid surgery altogether.

"With flexion distraction therapy, key areas of the back are targeted for stretching. Patients lie on a special table that is broken up into sections. Each section can be moved separately in order to stretch the back in very specific ways. Mild pressure is applied to key parts of the table in order to depress it and further help stretch and decompress the inflamed areas of the spine. For some patients, there is immediate relief," explained Dr. Michael Mills, a Kittanning chiropractor at Mills Chiropractic Center .

The principle behind the technique is to create negative pressure – a suction force – within areas where disc problems are present. This force pulls the discs back to their proper positions and helps draw fluids back into them. In turn, the discs take on more normal shapes and are better able to function as originally designed.

"There is no need for a patient to have suffered a particular injury to benefit from this treatment. In fact, simple age often causes the dehydration and malformation of the discs. Even in these cases, the flexion distraction technique will still work to help bring fluid back into the disc and restore its proper shape," Dr. Mills said.
