Man, I lived through the air raid sirens at 10:00 a.m. CST/CDT throughout my grade school years, and beyond.
Mayor Daley senior caught some shit for setting off the sirens when the White Sox won the pennant in '59, mostly from north siders.
And of course there was the air raid shelter mania in the early 60's. Neither side had the nerve to pull the trigger.
M.A.D. worked with the 'not-mad'.
I was watching this bullshit in grammar school. My little ball-busting friends and I were extremely skeptical, to say the least, as the nuns hustled us down to the basement.
The joke was...kneel down facing the wall, place your head between your knees, and kiss your ass goodbye!
