AUGUSTA, Ga. — Not many spouses would be cool with a golf trip taking precedence over a honeymoon. But Jessica Hadwin is just fine with her husband Adam playing golf during the weekend they’d planned their first getaway as a married couple, given that Adam would be playing in the Masters.
Hadwin, who made headlines earlier this year for carding a 59 in the CareerBuilder Challenge, won entry into the Masters thanks to his victory at the Valspar Championship just three weeks before Augusta. It was a wonderful, life-changing opportunity, with just one problem: Adam and Jessica were set to get married on March 24, with a honeymoon in Bora Bora to follow.
Fortunately, they’d discussed this possibility, and had booked refundable tickets on the off chance that life would break the Hadwins’ way. And did it ever.
Hadwin rolled into Augusta ugly, bogeying his first two holes on Thursday. But he settled down, birdied the next two to get back to even par, and then hung on through two windy, grueling days to make the cut by a single stroke.
“It would have been disappointing to miss the cut, definitely,” he grinned after his second round. “I’m very, very happy right now.” (Adam has promised to reschedule the trip to Bora Bora as soon as possible, but given the fact that he bought Jessica a house as a wedding present with his Valspar winnings, he’s got a bit of latitude.)
On Friday, Jessica followed Adam’s grouping, watching with mounting concern as his easy entry into the weekend got a bit rougher with a double-bogey on 17. So is Jessica prepared for a lifetime of nerve-wracking walks up and down fairways?
“It’s nothing,” she said, “compared to walking down the aisle.”
