Effnet licenses its header compression technology for Cellular IoT

Luleå 2017-04-07 -- Effnet AB, the premier provider of header compression software for wireless and fixed networks, today announced that it has licensed its header compression technology for Cellular IoT to a leading Canadian provider of next-generation solutions for the global telecom industry.

Cellular networks can provide connectivity for Internet of Things (IoT) and enable Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) applications. 3GPP network operators can use different cellular IoT technologies like NarrowBand IoT (NB-IoT) and enhanced Machine Type Communication (eMTC). Cellular IoT technologies support a massive number of connected devices, long battery life and indoor coverage. Cellular IoT specifications were published in 3GPP Release 12 and recently frozen in Release 13. The specification recommends use of header compression technology (ROHC) for control plane optimization of IP data services. ROHC is integrated in Cellular IoT devices e.g. category NB1 (NB-IoT device) and category M1 (eMTC device) and in the Mobility Management Entity (MME) in the Enhanced Packet Core (EPC) of a cellular network.

"The 3GPP ecosystem is responding to the competition in LPWAN solutions for IoT from companies such as SigFox and LoRa.  So the time to market is of essence. Both the device and system vendors are reacting quickly to support the latest specifications in their products. Our header compression technology with its high quality and performance is suitable for devices with low battery and low CPU power as well as for LTE EPC/MME systems that need to support millions of Cat-NB1 and Cat-M1 connections." says Aniruddha Kulkarni, Managing Director of Effnet AB. "This agreement is yet another step in building a portfolio of contracts generating recurring revenue streams for Effnet," he concludes.
