Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN) said this morning that Russian President Vladimir Putin has no place on the world stage if he keeps up his support for the Syrian regime.
The chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee talked to Bill Hemmer about the next steps after a chemical attack by Syrian forces on civilians.
Corker said Putin must immediately end his support for Assad, whom he called a "monstrous dictator."
"Putin can show whether he's worthy or not of being on the world stage by immediately withdrawing support for Assad or demonstrate that he really has no moral clarity and doesn't deserve to be on the world stage," he said.
Corker said he believes President Trump "now understands who Assad is and Syria is being looked at in a very different place."
He praised the job American forces are doing against ISIS in Syria, but said the situation with regard to Assad is far more complicated.
Corker said military leaders are developing plans to go after the Syrian regime, acknowledging that American people do not want a long ground campaign.
But he said the "best response" right now would be for Putin to end his support for Assad so that the Syrian dictator can be arrested for war crimes.
"They bomb hospitals purposely, everyday. That's what they do. ... They withhold medical supplies so people will die. This is what [Assad] does," said Corker, adding that President Obama missed an opportunity to respond in 2013 when Assad used chemical weapons and the international community supported a response.
