Oddly enough the largest fish I have caught have been in fresh water with the alligator gar being the largest. That fish almost hit 80 lbs. I have also caught some cat fish that went over 50 pounds.
I have never really tried to catch giants in salt water but have caught a few sizable fish with amberjacks being the largest of my salt water catches. A few of the jacks probably went over 40 pounds.
