Chelsea Clinton Finally Reveals Whether She Will Run for Office

Former First Daughter Chelsea Clinton revealed to "Variety" whether she will follow in her parents' footsteps and seek elected office in the near future.

The 37-year-old Manhattan, N.Y. resident told the magazine that she will not be running for any seat, after months to years of speculation might do so.

I am not running for public office," Clinton said.

She said that she has been routinely asked whether she will seek a city council seat, the New York mayorship or even her mother's former Senate seat.

Clinton said she was also asked whether she thought she could do a better job than those officials who she would prospectively run to replace.

Clinton said she "loves" her city councilwoman, Democrat Rosie Mendez, and is "obsessed" with Leticia James, the city's elected public advocate.

She also said she supports Mayor Bill de Blasio (D), who preceded James as public advocate.

The announcement may be seen as a sigh of relief for Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), who is the next New York senator up for reelection, in 2020.

Gillibrand was tapped by then-Gov. David Paterson (D-N.Y.) to succeed Clinton's mother Hillary in that seat after President Barack Obama nominated her as secretary of state.

However, Clinton said that if someone steps-down from a seat or "something changes," she will take a second look at the possibility of running for office.

New York's next two major elections are De Blasio's this year, and the state's governorship next year, in which Andrew Cuomo (D) is likely to seek a third term in one of the nation's governorships that does not have term limits.
