Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) blasted President Donald Trump's new executive orders as "an attack on science" and a "declaration of war."
Speaking to MSNBC, Markey - who co-authored a 2009 House bill that would have established caps on U.S. carbon emissions - called out Trump for moving against President Barack Obama's efforts to curb climate change.
Markey said the administration is declaring "war" on the Obama-era initiatives
"This is basically an attack on science, on climate, on the clean energy revolution which has been creating hundreds of thousands of new jobs because of Obama-era policies," said Markey, accusing Trump of "denying" climate change science.
Trump moved Tuesday to unravel energy regulations, targeting the Obama administration’s signature program - The Clean Power Plan - that was intended to curb carbon emissions.
"Together we are going to start a new energy revolution," said Trump.
The president and Republicans have argued that Obama's policies, including restrictions on emissions at coal-fired power plants, were "job-killers."
Markey, however, accused the administration of refusing to accept the "catastrophic" situation when it comes to global warming and what must be done to deal with it.
"[Trump] refuses to accept the reality that the planet is running a fever. There are no emergency rooms for planets," he said.
