That kind of variation in the numbers supports the notion that the numbers have significance, despite our not knowing exactly how to interpret them.
If the premise were correct that most or all of the daily short selling was merely market makers briefly shorting stock to keep trading smooth -- then why would that number vary from 4 to 78 or more percent? Especially when some of us have put orders in at the ask, and yet not have our orders filled? Wouldn't those diligent market makers have shorted stock to fill our orders, if the "it's only market makers temporarily shorting it" theory were true?
