Sen. Thune: Senate Can 'Work on' Health Care Bill If It Passes House
Some GOP senators, including Mike Lee, Tom Cotton and Rand Paul, are urging the House not to pass the American Health Care Act, warning that it will not pass in the Senate.
The senators argued that the bill does not fulfill conservatives' promises to fully repeal ObamaCare, with Paul regularly calling it "ObamaCare lite."
Shannon Bream asked Sen. John Thune (R-SD), chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, whether the legislation can get through the House and Senate with so much opposition from Republicans.
Thune answered that this is the "beginning" of a process that will start with the House passing the legislation. Thune emphasized that the Senate will then be able to "work on" the bill to help it pass the Senate.
"The status quo is unacceptable. The American people made it very clear that skyrocketing premiums and deductibles and copays and out-of-pocket-costs, they can't live with that," he said, acknowledging that there is a "long way to go."
He said the 240 Republicans in the House and the 52 in the Senate all have different ideas about how to repeal and replace ObamaCare, but the party must "stay focused."
"We have to get it across the finish line. We made that promise to the American people and it's a promise we need to honor," said Thune.
