I've read mega data analysis and reports that demonstrate the use of statins, (HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, lipid lowering meds) while effective at lowering blood lipids does not correlate with lowering the death rate. The most effective way to lower the death rate in this circumstance is the old fashioned way, healthy diet and regular exercise. There are a small percentage of individuals who's body produces too much cholesterol regardless of life style and for them it seems to make sense to use statins, but even then there is nothing that I've read that proves it extends life significantly. Under those circumstances I would certainly take them myself as a precaution for stroke and heart attack. It does not seem to make sense but there are a number of studies that back it up.
