Karamba Security’s Autonomous Security Recognized with Frost & Sullivan’s 2017 Award for Automotive New Product Innovation

Award’s customer impact analysis affirms Karamba’s leadership  in securing connected and autonomous cars against cyberattacks

HOD HASHARON, Israel and ANN ARBOR, Mich., March 15, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Frost & Sullivan has recognized Karamba Security , a provider of autonomous cybersecurity software for connected and autonomous vehicles, with the 2017 North American New Product Innovation Award for the Automotive Industry.

Industry leaders agree that tomorrow’s autonomous vehicles need to be secure against cybersecurity threats in a safe and predictable manner and, ultimately, to self-heal. 1

Karamba’s Autonomous Security achieves that by autonomously hardening externally-connected electronic control units (ECUs) and preventing hacker infiltration with zero false positives. Karamba’s innovative approach was recognized as unique and suitable to the industry’s intolerance to false positives, which mistakenly block legitimate vehicle commands, thereby introducing safety risks.

The award is further testimony to the fact that Karamba has the best approach to preventing cyberattacks. When Frost & Sullivan evaluated the market, it analyzed Customer Impact, measuring against these criteria: customer service experience; purchase and ownership experience and price/performance value. In a second category, New Product Attributes, it measured against: match to needs; reliability; quality; positioning and design. According to Frost & Sullivan analysts, Karamba was the best across all categories.

“Karamba's Autonomous Security is designed to address the main cybersecurity concerns of original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and customers—attack prevention, seamless integration with zero false positives and the robustness and performance to fit existing hardware and software environments,” said Senior Consultant Sriram Venkatraman at Frost & Sullivan. “Karamba enables attack prevention with zero false positives, which, in turn, alleviates safety risks.”

Reliability was a key factor in the analysts’ evaluation. “Karamba applies prevention that is based on the customer's factory settings. This prevents attacks without the risk of false positives or false negatives. Because Karamba’s cybersecurity policy is based on factory settings and does not rely on malware signatures, it prevents attacks without any need for new malware signature updates regardless of connectivity,” said Venkatraman. “Karamba’s prevention approach provides zero-day protection across the protected product's lifecycle.”

“We’ve been researching the automotive industry for a long time and know all the ecosystem participants. With the spike in autonomous security, Karamba stood out as the only one worldwide that prevents hacks and stops false positives,” noted Venkatraman. “Cybersecurity solutions of the future must be robust, standalone and agnostic. Karamba's solution is more reliable because it provides automatic policy generation, prevents in-memory attacks, reports malicious activities and classifies exploits by attack path, type of attack and specific ECU.”

“Receiving this prestigious recognition is a great accomplishment for our team and underscores that we successfully introduced a unique solution into the market, delivering high impact and customer value,” said Ami Dotan, co-founder and CEO of Karamba Security. “We are most grateful to the Frost & Sullivan analysts and organization for bestowing this honor upon us.”

A key challenge to vehicle OEMs and Tier-1 providers is ensuring the safety of connected and autonomous vehicles in the face of the increasing rate of connectivity. In-vehicle communications extend from infotainment to mobile-based communication (leveraging 4G and 5G), voice recognition, navigation and communication with other vehicles and infrastructure. Connectivity with external devices multiplies threat vectors and increases vulnerability, exposing vehicles and sensitive data to hackers.

According to Frost & Sullivan research, the yearly growth of connected cars will be about 14.4% at the global level. In 2017, autonomous and connected car security will continue to challenge the automotive industry across North America and Europe. The vehicle has become a gateway for various technologies, functions and features. Car sharing, sophisticated infotainment and human machine interface (HMI), connectivity, the race for advanced driver assist systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving are all demanding security. Going forward, the extended automotive ecosystem will work toward integrating technologies and applications around connected living, the smart home, the Internet of Things (IoT) and vehicle-to-everything (V2X). “The automotive industry is rife with robust growth opportunities,” Venkatraman added.

Karamba Autonomous Security provides attack prevention with zero false positives, no development efforts and without anti-malware updates, meaning Karamba helps OEMs provide feasible prevention. Karamba’s Autonomous Security is not limited to cars; it enables the automated hardening and autonomous prevention of any controller-based architecture, specifically IoT, medical devices and drones.

Karamba Security recently extended its reach in Japan by partnering with Asgent, Inc. through a reseller agreement to introduce its Autonomous Security technology to the country’s automotive and IoT markets. Asgent provides local support for Karamba’s Autonomous Security. Applications are not restricted to connected cars and include smart home devices. By reselling and distributing Karamba’s Autonomous Security technology, Asgent will enable Japanese manufacturers at the leading edge of global efforts to protect vehicles and IoT devices from cyberthreats.

Karamba’s technology does not require any developer resources to generate the security policy, and its central processing unit (CPU) and memory footprints are negligible. OEMs and Tier-1 providers leverage Karamba's software to identify attack attempts immediately and block hackers from infiltrating the car’s network, thereby ensuring the driver’s safety. In addition to OEMs and Tier-1 providers, chip manufacturers and operating system (OS) solution providers are working closely with Karamba to develop a robust security solution.
