The CDC has expanded the time and area of concern for Zika risk in Florida around blood and tissue donation -- particularly sperm.
Previously, blood and tissue donations collected beginning July 29, 2016, in Miami-Dade County were considered to be at risk for carrying Zika virus, based on domestic transmission in the area. Based on new cases, the agency has pushed the cutoff date back to June 15, 2016, and added areas of potentially increased risk to now include Palm Beach and Broward Counties. Agency officials said these two counties don't necessarily have local transmission, but people in South Florida often travel between counties and may not have accurately recalled their travel to Miami-Dade.
Women who became pregnant after June 15, 2016, with a partner who traveled to one of these counties or with donated sperm that came from one of these counties should consult their healthcare provider.
