New embedded chip from Socionext features PowerVR Series8XE GPU from Imagination

NUREMBERG, Germany , March 13, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- EMBEDDED WORLD -- Imagination Technologies (IMG.L) announces that the new SC1810 system on chip (SoC) from Socionext Inc., headquartered in Shin-Yokohama, Japan, a leader in advanced SoC technology for video and imaging systems, uses a PowerVR Series8XE GPU for innovative, highly efficient graphics. The SC1810 is targeted for embedded graphical industrial and automotive applications such as demanding camera based driver information systems, cluster and further information displays such as head-up display (HUD) units, passenger displays or rear seat entertainment systems.

The SC1810 represents a further evolution in both features and performance for in-vehicle graphics, an area where Socionext has a well-proven track record. In addition to its high-resolution PowerVR graphics capability, enabling significant improvement in 3D image processing performance compared to Socionext’s previous products, the SoC has a quad-core processor and is also capable of handling six channels of Full HD video inputs, and three channels of Full HD display outputs. The SC1810 also provides multiple H.264 decoding and encoding cores that can process various camera images simultaneously, supporting surround view, electrical mirror or drive recorder applications, which are rapidly gaining popularity.

Socionext and Imagination are demonstrating the new chip at the Embedded World Conference, being held March 14-16 in Nuremberg. This will be the first demonstration of a PowerVR Series8XE GPU in a sampled SoC.

Series8XE GPUs from Imagination deliver the best performance/mm2 for the smallest silicon footprint and power profile while incorporating advanced features and support for the latest APIs including OpenGL® ES 3.2 and Vulkan™ 1.0. The PowerVR GPU performance empowers Socionext’s CGI Studio 3.0, the software development platform for hybrid 2D and 3D graphical interfaces.

Says Markus Mierse, senior director IOT and Graphics Solution Business Unit, Socionext: “Our new SC1810 chipset is part of an expanding range of graphics processor products that leverage our strong engineering expertise and cutting edge technologies to address the most demanding embedded applications, and provide the rugged features and long life needed for multiple industries. The PowerVR GPU hits the sweet spot in terms of performance, efficiency and features. The combination of PowerVR and our Socionext 2D ‘SEERIS’ graphics framework provides a very effective solution for home and industrial use, as well as automotive systems.”

Says Chris Longstaff, senior director of product and technology marketing, PowerVR, Imagination: “PowerVR is increasingly the GPU of choice for automotive as the car continues to experience massive change with ever more electronics for a safer, more secure, connected and entertaining experience. Socionext is an innovative and valued partner for Imagination, and we were delighted to work with them to ensure the PowerVR GPU in their system provides the best possible consumer experience.”

About PowerVR GPUs
The PowerVR graphics processor (GPU) family leads the market in technological capability, roadmap breadth and ecosystem, setting the benchmark for mobile and embedded GPUs. PowerVR is the leading graphics technology because it is based on a sophisticated and unique architecture. PowerVR’s efficiency through tile-based deferred rendering (TBDR) ensures the lowest possible bandwidth usage and the lowest amount of processing cycles per task, and all of this leads to high performance efficiency and the lowest power consumption per frame, outperforming other solutions. OEMs using chips with PowerVR inside can translate this advantage into products that provide the most amazing visual experiences with the longest possible battery life.
