Report: White House Weighs Military Action Against North Korea
The White House is weighing whether to take military action against North Korea following last month's missile test by the hermit regime, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.
The reported strategy review of potential military action or regime change comes just after the brazen assassination of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's estranged half-brother in Malaysia.
The WSJ report characterizes American allies in the region as being "on edge" over the potential "shift in American policy" under President Donald Trump.
The report states:
About two weeks ago, deputy national security adviser K.T. McFarland convened a meeting with national security officials across the government and asked them for proposals on North Korea, including ideas that one official described as well outside the mainstream.
The request was for all options, ranging from U.S. recognition of North Korea as a nuclear state to military action against Pyongyang. Ms. McFarland’s directive was for the administration to undergo a comprehensive rethink of America’s North Korea policy.
Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster was named as Trump's new National Security Adviser last week.
Kevin Corke reported on the situation this morning, noting that the White House is watching North Korea "very carefully" and that a major policy shift could be in the works.
Pyongyang test-fired an intermediate-range missile into the Sea of Japan a few weeks ago at the same time that Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe met at Mar-a-Lago with President Trump.
The test raised concerns that the North would move to test an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) capable of reaching U.S. shores.
