Report: 9 in 10 Pro Golfers Say They'd Play With Trump Despite Potential Backlash
Prominent golfers, including major champions Rory McIlroy and Ernie Els, have gotten backlash in recent weeks on social media after playing a round with President Trump.
But according to the New York Times, the overwhelming majority of PGA Tour golfers would still play with the president, if asked.
Reporter Karen Crouse said she asked the question to 56 golfers and 50 (89.3) said they would indeed play with Trump. Just three said no, while three declined to answer.
The 27-year-old McIlroy took some heat on social media over the weekend after his agent tweeted a photo of his playing partners, which included Trump and former New York Yankee Paul O'Neill.
McIlroy, a native of Northern Ireland, said he was "massively" interested in the 2016 U.S. election and was "intrigued how a successful businessman could transition into running for the highest office in the land."
Els, who played with the president earlier this month, maintained that it had nothing to do with politics.
"He is the president at the moment. If it was Barack Obama, I would have played. If it was Hillary Clinton, I would have played," he said, also reportedly using some colorful language toward those who took issue with his decision.
Tiger Woods also played with the 45th president in early January, saying he had fun
"What most impressed me was how far he hits the ball at 70 years old. He takes a pretty good lash. Our discussion topics were wide-ranging; it was fun. We both enjoyed the bantering, bickering and needling. I also shared my vision for golf and what I'm trying to do," Woods said.
Meantime, Trump couldn't help bringing up a past hole-in-one while meeting with business leaders at the White House Thursday. He asked GE CEO Jeff Immelt - his playing partner during that round - to recount the achievement...
