Gorka: 30 to 40% of Those Released From Gitmo Return to Terror
Dr. Sebastian Gorka, deputy assistant to President Donald Trump, joined "Fox & Friends" Wednesday to discuss the president's desire to keep open the Guantanamo Bay detention center.
One of former President Barack Obama's campaign promises was to attempt to close Gitmo, and during his eight years in office, he released 201 prisoners -- leaving 41 as of Trump's Inauguration.
"We know there's at least 30 if not more than 40 percent recidivism rate from the people released at Gitmo," Gorka said. "President Obama released lots and lots of people that were there for very good reason, and what happened? Almost half the time they returned to the battlefield."
According to a BBC report, Abu-Zakariya al-Britani, a former Guantanamo Bay detainee, recently carried out a suicide bombing in Iraq. ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack.
Gorka said he was not surprised this former Gitmo detainee returned to terrorism, reiterating the importance of keeping the prison open.
"Guantanamo Bay is an incredibly important intelligence asset. ... We stand by the president's determination during the campaign that this is something we have to keep," he said.
