Sheriff Defends Trump: 'No Uproar' When Obama Deported Illegal Immigrants

A Louisiana sheriff derided what he called a double standard coming from those who are opposed to President Trump's swift actions to combat illegal immigration.

Sheriff Greg Champagne, of Saint Charles Parish, said a closer look at the argument makes it clear it's "all about the messenger and not the message."

Champagne noted former President Barack Obama deported an estimated 2.5 million illegal immigrants in his second term, but received little backlash from liberal precincts that have been a thorn in Trump's side since his campaign.

There was "no uproar" against Obama, he said.

He also dismissed the notion that ICE agents and local authorities are actively "round[ing] up kids from schools or [illegals] who are law-abiding" and sending them back to Mexico.

"If they are arrestable on a state or local offense, they are arrested," he said, adding that ICE is often notified if the inmate is then found to be in the United States illegally.

"We are a nation of laws," he said. "We have to bring a halt to the influx of illegal immigration at our Southern border."

Champagne also criticized Gov. Dan Malloy (D-Conn.) who on Thursday told his state's law enforcement to ignore federal policies regarding processing illegal immigrants at schools and prisons.
