That "new" home just might be older than you think. They are masters at going unnoticed. These critters are amazing when it comes to adapting to new situations and environments. As far as I know, they now live in 49 states and their numbers are growing in every state. As a boy, the only time I ever heard of a coyote was when watching a nature show or the occasional Road Runner cartoon and now they are just about everywhere including my neighborhood which is in the city limits of Columbia SC which, I assume, explains why I don't see as many cats and other small critters roaming about like I once did.
Quite a few years back a small number of red wolves were released in eastern North Carolina and now the red wolf stock is not as pure as it once was because of amorous coyotes.
New York has a Coywolf population.
