A new Public Policy Polling poll revealed that American voters have so little trust Trump that they find Saturday Night Live to be more credible than the President.
According to PPP, “The New York Times has repeatedly been a target of Trump’s attacks, but voters say they think the Times had more credibility than Trump 52/37.
Trump seems to be losing ground in that conflict- he was only down 51/42 a week ago. The Presidency has been so diminished over the last 3 weeks that voters even say Saturday Night Live has more credibility than Trump, 48/43.”
Who knew that a White House that is led by a president who makes false statements on a daily basis would quickly lose credibility with the American people?
The American people trust a late night comedy show more than the President because SNL lies to them less. It could be argued that SNL tells the truth more than Donald Trump.
In practical political terms, a president who lacks credibility has lost the American people. Credibility and trust go hand in hand, and an untrusted president has a very good chance of only being a one term president.
The entire premise of both Trump’s campaign and his governing style has been that the American people don’t care. Trump claims that the American people don’t care about tax returns, facts, or policies.
While a candidate may be able to get away with a lot, especially if he has a corporate cable news establishment that acts as a happy enabler, the standard is different for a president.
Trump is being held to the presidential standard, and he is failing so badly that an Alec Baldwin impression and Weekend Update have been deemed more credible by the American people than the current administration.
