Obama Claims Job Growth as Food Stamp Rolls Explode

Posted on December 24, 2012

President Barack Obama says job growth is rising like a rocket, so why aren’t food stamp enrollments sinking like a stone?

Mr. Obama claims he has created 33 months of job growth, but an analysis by Breitbart News finds that food stamp enrollments have grown for 40 months. Indeed, throughout Mr. Obama’s presidency, monthly food stamp enrollments have never declined by more than 1%.

Breitbart News analyzed monthly food stamp enrollment figures published by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. To date, the Obama Administration has released 45 months-worth of enrollment figures for the food stamp program (officially known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP). Only five times has the number of food stamp recipients been less than the month prior, and only then by less than 1%.

When Mr. Obama was sworn into office in January 2009, 31,983,716 individuals received food stamps. That number climbed steadily for 28 consecutive months to 45,410,683. Then, in June 2011, it ebbed slightly by 226,756, a drop of less than 1%. In October 2011 and January, February, and April 2012, the figures dipped fractionally from the month prior, but then resumed their rise.

As of September 2012 (the most recent month the USDA has reported), 47,710,324 individuals—or 1 in 7 Americans—were on food stamps.
