SAN FRANCISCO — City officials here are suing the Trump administration over an order to cut off federal funds to cities that shelter undocumented immigrants.
The lawsuit, filed Tuesday in federal court, called the executive order unconstitutional and “a severe invasion of San Francisco’s sovereignty.”
San Francisco and such other big cities as Boston, Los Angeles and New York have vowed to protect undocumented immigrants by refusing to direct local police to enforce federal immigration law. Some have set aside money to help fund immigrants’ legal battles.
Trump’s order says by doing so, these “jurisdictions have caused immeasurable harm to the American people and to the very fabric of our republic.” The order directs government agencies to strip their funding from the municipalities known as sanctuary cities. San Francisco city leaders said they are the first to file such a suit, and argued Trump’s order exceeds the president’s power.
