Miami-Dade Mayor Ends 'Sanctuary' Status, Orders Jails to Comply With Trump's Immigration Plan

The mayor of Miami-Dade County has ordered his local jails to comply with President Donald Trump's executive order on immigration enforcement, in order to avoid punishments for so-called "sanctuary cities."

On Wednesday, Trump signed an executive order pulling all federal funding from sanctuary cities that refuse to turn undocumented criminals over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement and other federal officials.

Mayor Carlos Gimenez on Thursday ordered county jails to obey federal detention requests, which effectively ends the county's position as a "sanctuary" for illegal immigrants.

“In light of the provisions of the Executive Order, I direct you and your staff to honor all immigration detainer requests received from the Department of Homeland Security,” Gimenez wrote Daniel Junior, the interim director of the corrections and rehabilitation department.

"Miami-Dade County complies with federal law and intends to fully cooperate with the federal government," Gimenez wrote. "I will partner with the Board of County Commissioners to address any issues necessary to achieve this end."
