‘Hanoi Jane’ Fonda to Lead L.A. Women’s March Against Trump
Jane Fonda, who infamously earned the nickname “Hanoi Jane” during the Vietnam War, will lead the Downtown Los Angeles-based “Women’s March” against President-elect Donald Trump on Saturday, the day after Trump is sworn in as America’s 45th president.
According to the Daily News, dozens of other celebrities are expected to join Fonda at the rally. They include Ariana Grande, Idina Menzel, Laverne Cox, Debbie Allen, Miley Cyrus and Alfre Woodard.
Fonda earned the nickname “Hanoi Jane” after she denounced American soldiers as “war criminals” and was notoriously photographed astride an anti-aircraft battery that was used to shoot down American planes, while wearing the helmet of a North Vietnamese soldier.
At least 70,000 people have RSVP’d that they plan to attend Saturday’s Women’s March in Downtown Los Angeles, which coincides with several more protest planned to take place in various other parts of the nation. Many of the women attending will also be sporting what is known as the pink “Pussyhat.”
Emiliana Guereca, one of the organizers of Saturday’s march, issued a statement about the event. “Women’s March Los Angeles is about having our voices heard, activating our community and unifying our community. Women’s rights are human rights,” she said.
The Daily News noted that there will be heavy police presence to ensure safety for everyone attending.
“We want people to express their first amendments rights,” LAPD Officer Aereon Jefferson told the Daily News.
There will be a host of other events taking place throughout California to protest Trump this weekend.
The San Francisco Chronicle created a list of planned protests against Trump in the Bay Area, coinciding with Friday’s historic inauguration. The majority of protests are taking place on Inauguration Day itself.
An afternoon of “Sitting on Inauguration Day” is reportedly being hosted by the San Francisco Zen Center to “as an expression of support for the Women’s March on Washington on January 21.”
A not-so-quiet protest named “Bang the Pots, raise a Din” will be happening on inauguration day also. “In keeping with the Latin American tradition of Cacerolazo, residents throughout the Bay Area are being encouraged to step outside their homes from 6 to 6:05 p.m. and bang on pots and pans in protest,” the Chronicle writes of the event description.
However, not every Bay Area event is against Trump. The Sonoma County Inaugural Ball is reportedly a ticketed dinner and dance in celebration of Trump’s inauguration. It starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Flamingo Conference Center, 2777 Fourth St., Santa Rosa.
