Nanosys still doesn't have a cadmium free offering:

The company is also working on electrically-activated quantum dot materials, but this remains in the research phase as they are s hifting their efforts from Cd-based to Cd-free materials , with a focus on the blue material to start.
Next step per Nanosys is moving polarizer:

Hartlove explained they have been supplying materials to panel partners who are trying to develop displays using this capability. But there is a complication. The polarizer, which normally sits on the outside of the liquid crystal cell, needs to move inside the cell. This has to happen for two reasons. For one, quantum dot generation is a homogenous process, which means light generated in the green subpixel will emit forward and backward. If this generation takes place in the location of current color filters – outside of the LC cell – the distance is long enough to allow some leakage into adjacent sub-pixels, compromising color purity and color volume. In addition, this generated light is unpolarized, so the back-generated light would interfere with the polarized light coming from the back light. Therefore, the polarizer needs to move inside the cell.
Nanosys is not working on the methods to create an in-cell polarizer, but it is clear one can’t use the polymer-based polarizers used today on the outside on the inside of the cell. What companies are doing here is a story for another day.

Nitto Denko is a leader in the field of polarizers.
My bet is that they are working on the issue Nanosys quoted for moving the polarizer inside the cell. They are also increasing polarizer production in China.

QMC has completed film development of cadmium free film with their partner
I assume Nitto Denko since that is the only publicly known film partner.

QMC is expanding into China.
Granted, we have not had news, but I'm sure something is progressing there. It might be more than a coincidence that Nitto Denko is building manufacturing capacity in China for 2018 production. At least that's my opinion since the Nitto Denko news followed QMC Asia news by a few months and they are partners for the film which needs a polarizer. I see this as potential QMC Asia expansion in 2017 to early 2018 if there is a relationship between the polarizer and film product.

Take it for what it's worth to each of you, but this is my reading of potential tea leaves.
