China: Shifting Development Focus from Foundries to Fabless IC Design

The relations between China’s display industry and international polarizer suppliers will eventually change from the current state of cooperation to competition. First-tier suppliers in Japan such as Nitto Denko and Sumimoto Chem, along with Taiwanese suppliers Chimei Materials and BenQ Materials, will soon be facing challenges from Chinese rivals.

Nitto Denko looks to medical products for growth

Nitto Denko aims to more than double medical product sales to 50 billion yen ($434 million) in the fiscal year ending March 2019, President Hideo Takasaki told The Nikkei on Friday, seeing a bright future in such areas as nucleic acid medicines.

Nitto Denko is also investing in new wound-dressing and medical tape offerings.

The company's electronic components business faces a headwind as smartphone sales slow. But "by focusing on high-performance, thin polarizing plates, we'll fight the problem of price erosion," Takasaki vowed. In automotive technology, it will pour more effort into protective materials for radars that measure the distance between cars or sense obstacles.
